Target Shooting

Live Firing Marksmanship Training on the L98A2 Cadet General Purpose Rifle at RAF Boulmer.

L98A2 Weapon Handling Training

Cadets have to do eight hours of dry-training on the L98A2 Cadet General Purpose rifle before they complete a Weapon Handling Test. Once they pass their Weapon Handling Test, they can then live-fire the weapon. The rifles being used in this training are the L103 Drill Purpose weapons which cannot be used to fire live ammunition - they are used strictly for training purposes.

Portable Air Combat Simulator

The Portable Air Combat Simulator is a new project for 861. The finished result will be a jet fighter cockpit built by the cadets out of plumbing materials!

Cadet NCO Promotions

Cadet Corporal Jessica Marran was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on Monday 5 Dec 11. Cadets Alex Burn and Kieran Thompson were promoted to the rank of Corporal on Thursday 8 Dec 11. Congratulations!

DTE Warcop Multi-Activity Camp 2011

DTE Warcop hosts Durham/Northumberland Wings annual multi-activity camp each October half-term. Activities include Skill at Arms Training, Live Firing on several types of outdoor shooting ranges, climbing/abseiling and leadership exercises. 112 Cadets and 40+ Adult Staff attend the camp every year.

Royal International Air Tattoo 2011

Wideopen Air Cadets attended the Royal International Air Tattoo from 12-19 Jul 11 to work as part of the largest Air Cadet Contingent anywhere in the UK.

861 (Wideopen) Squadron Grand Opening

The Grand Opening of 861 (Wideopen) Squadrons new buulding by the Lord Lieutenant for Tyne and Wear, Mr Nigel Sherlock DL FRSA in the presence of honoured guests, cadets and parents.

Powerboating Course

Cdt Cpl Ramsay, Cdt Nicholson and CI Gaffney took part in an RYA Level 2 Powerboating course at Derwent Sailing Club. This course qualified the students to captain powered vessels up to 10 metres in length, anywhere in the world!

Gosforth Park and 733 (Newcastle Airport) Sqn Multi-Activity Camp

Multi-activity camp based at Gosforth Park but using the facilities at 733 (Newcastle Airport) Squadron as well. Activities included archery, small-bore Live Firing Marksmanship Training, radio communications, leadership exercises, flight simulation and campcraft training.

RAF Boulmer Multi-Activity Camp

Cadets from 861 (Wideopen), 733 (Newcastle Airport) and 1114 (Gosforth) Squadrons visited RAF Boulmer on 27-29 May 2011 for a fun-packed multi-activity camp which included target shooting, leadership development, Air Battlespace Management exercises and visits to 202 Squadron and the Command Reporting Centre.

Multi-activity camp organised by Durham/Northumberland Wing at DTE Warcop in Cumbria. Cadets are involved in a wide variety of activities including target shooting, leadership exercises and climbing/abseiling.
