Air Cadets Gives You Wings!

Posted by FltLtElliott on April 27, 2010

Four Air Cadets from 861 (Wideopen) Squadron travelled to RAF Leeming, North Yorkshire, to experience the thrill of powered flying.  The cadets were blessed with clear blue skies at Leeming and the flying started at 8.30am after a comprehensive safety briefing from the staff of 11 Air Experience Flight.

The cadets flew with experienced Royal Air Force pilots and all came back down to earth with stories of aerobatic stunts and other maneuvors that they had completed while in the air.

Cadet Corporal Cameron Nicholson commented: “Powered flying in the Air Cadets is a fantastic opportunity to put the theory we learn in the classroom into practice.  The pilots let me take control of the aircraft and I flew the majority of the sortie under his supervision.  I can’t wait to come back and have another flight!”.

Cadet Sergeant Ben Scorer said “I love aerobatics! It has been a while since I have had the chance to do powered flying at the Air Experience Flight, but I love it every time I go!”.

Flying Officer James Elliott, Officer Commanding 861 (Wideopen) Squadron, stated that “The cadets are so lucky to have such great opportunities such as powered flying through the Air Cadet Organisation.  Powered flying is fantastic fun and many of our cadets go on to be pilots in the Royal Air Force or in the civilian world”.

If you wish to experience the thrill of flying, why not come down and see what 861 (Wideopen) Squadron has to offer?  The Squadron parades every Monday and Thursday at Hazelwood Community Primary School, Wideopen from 7-9.30pm and is open to young people aged 13-17 years old.  For further information, visit our website at www.861atc.org or e-mail us at 861@aircadets.org.
